How to run it

  1. Pack a car art kit

A clipboard, two pencils with caps, a small sharpener and a zip bag of crayons. Leave markers at home: caps disappear under seats and ink ends up on the upholstery.

  2. Start with drawing bingo

Hand out the bingo sheet. When someone spots a thing on the card, they draw it in that square. First full row picks the next snack. Two different cards keep siblings from copying.

  3. Draw on the smooth stretches

Highways are smooth enough for a step-by-step page. Each character takes about six small steps, so a bump only spoils one step, not the whole drawing.

  4. Look up between drawings

Kids who get carsick do better with short bursts. Draw one square, then look out the window for the next thing to spot.

  5. Finish with a comic of the trip

At the hotel or on the way home, draw the funniest moment of the day as a four-panel comic. It makes a better souvenir than a keychain.

Tip: Tape the sheet to the clipboard at all four corners so it doesn’t slide off a lap on the turns.

Questions parents ask

Will drawing in the car make my kid carsick?

It can for some kids. Keep drawing to short bursts, sit them where they can see out the front, and switch to bingo spotting, which keeps their eyes on the window.

What age is drawing bingo for?

About 4 to 10. A 4-year-old can draw a circle for a cloud; a 10-year-old can make it a contest for the most detailed drawing.

Crayons or colored pencils in a hot car?

Colored pencils. Crayons left on a sunny seat melt.
